There are no laws in the UK that require a person to have life insurance. It's an entirely voluntary insurance.
So the simple things first. You have to be a UK resident in order to buy a life insurance policy from a UK based insurance company. This is not a requirement laid down in UK law, but UK laws and tax arrangements make it impossible for a UK based insurance company to offer insurance to anyone other than a UK resident.
But be aware that, if having taken out life insurance, you later live abroad, your policy will be invalidated. Naturally, invalidation does not apply if you are on holiday but if you have a short-term work assignment abroad you are well advised to inform your insurance company before you go.

The average wait for an outpatient appointment with the National Health Service in England is nearly seven weeks. A private health insurance policy, which will cover the cost of private medical treatment in the case of curable or short-term medical conditions. Health insurance provides the policyholder with the guarantee that treatment will be available as soon as they fall ill or injure themselves.
Private health insurance should not be regarded as an alternative to the National Health Service as private hospitals are generally not equipped for casualty situations, but it will ensure that you get care more quickly, at a time and place that suit your needs, and opens up a range of healthcare options. Having a health insurance policy is a good idea because it can ease some of the common concerns experienced by people who become ill.

Pets don't come cheaply.
The RSPCA estimates that the costs of owning a dog add up to an average of £700 a year, and serious illness can push that figure much higher.
Operations such as tumour removal or hip replacement will set a dog owner back between £1,000 and £5,000 in vets' fees. One in three pets require medical treatment each year and more than half a million cat and dog owners spend over £500 annually on vet fees - but only one in 10 animals is insured. |
